Senator for Vermont and Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has gained major traction in the last weeks, winning the New Hampshire Democratic Primary Election and catching up and even leading Hillary Clinton in some polls. Aside from his recent feats, how much do you know about the Democratic Socialist running for president. Here’s Five Interesting Facts About Bernie Sanders.
1.Bernie Sanders Has Done Some Acting
Back in 1999, Bernie Sanders played a Rabbi in the indie comedy, My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception directed by Martin Guigui. The film’s description on Amazon reads, “My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception is a “laugh out loud” film full of all things we love and hate about weddings. A slice of life film that shows us what really happens on the most important days in some of our lives. Whether you wish to follow the love triangle between the bride, groom and ex-boyfriend or see what the bridesmaids really talk about in the powder room; this is the movie for you. Take a peek into a Jewish-Italian wedding as the families and their guests show us what we are all thinking yet never say at these events. Regardless of your heritage, you will find at least one character and one sup plot you can relate to and it might make you think for a bit before getting married.” Bernie Sanders plays Rabbi Manny Shevitz and in his scene (below), Rabbi Manny Shevitz steps up to a podium and talks about growing up in Brooklyn. He then complains about the Brooklyn Dodgers moving to Los Angeles and players being able to become free agents. He rounds out his scene a comforting, “It’s not so bad…” Sanders’s scene is very humorous being that this is the special day of a couple getting married and the Rabbi is complaining about Baseball. If politics don’t plan out for Bernie Sanders I would love to see him do more work in Hollywood.
2.Bernie Sanders Released a Folk Album
Sanders released a Folk Album titled, We Shall Overcome in 1987. The album was released while he was running as an independent for mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Before Sanders became Mayor, Burlington had several noise ordinances that restricted music. So Bernie Sanders was the Footloose of music…kinda.
3.More Than One Politician in the Sanders Family
Bernie Sanders isn’t the only politician in his family. His older brother, Larry Sanders is a member of the Green Party in the United Kingdom. The Green Party is a left-wing party which puts emphasis on environmentalism and political ecology. So, while Bernie dukes it out for the Presidency here, his brother across the pond is vying for a seat in parliament. The Sanders are taking over!
4.Bernie Sanders Was Arrested for Protesting Segregation
Back in 1962, Sanders was arrested for protesting segregation in Chicago public schools. A photo of a 21-year-old Bernie Sanders taken by Chicago Police depicts Sanders being dragged away by police. It was a University of Chicago student when Sanders activism began to flourish. Danny Lyon, photographer of multiple protest and has captured Sanders several times, said, “His activism and when it occurred, as a young college student, set in motion the direction of his life.”
5.Sanders Spoke On The Senate Floor For 8 Hours
In 2010, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont started out a speech on the senate floor voicing his grievances with tax deal that was drawn up by President Obama and the Republic Leadership. Sanders then continued for over 8 and a half hours discussing the repercussions of the tax deal and why the middle class in America is collapsing.
Senator Bernie Sanders has done some amazing things in his lifetime and whether he becomes President or not, I see him continuing to do amazing things.
